Throughout our decades-long journey, BCMF has helped thousands of patients receive the necessary treatment. Initially focusing on pediatric surgical cases, BCMF now provides access to surgical treatment for patients of all ages. Below are the main categories of surgical conditions BCMF has addressed.
The general rule is, that we facilitate treatment for conditions that can be treated via surgery. This excludes conditions that require longer treatments like chemotherapy and dialysis or diseases that require lifelong medication like diabetes or hypertension.
This list is not exhaustive. If you are not sure if we cover the surgery, please contact us.
Cardiac conditions requiring surgery are among the most common cases BCMF has encountered. In children, we frequently help treat congenital cardiac conditions such as tetralogy of Fallot, ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, and patent ductus arteriosus. In adults, we often address multiple valvular abnormalities, including issues with the mitral and tricuspid valves, stenosis, and regurgitation due to rheumatic heart disease.
Injuries requiring surgery, including fractures, are prevalent among BCMF patients. Common fractures involve the upper arm and lower leg. Congenital conditions such as clubfoot and webbed fingers, as well as other deformities, are also supported for treatment. Additionally, non-congenital cases like acquired deformities, malunion or nonunion of fractures, residual foreign bodies, osteomyelitis, and osteonecrosis are frequently seen.
BCMF supports a wide range of gastrointestinal issues that require surgery, including congenital anomalies like imperforate anus and Hirschsprung's disease. We also treat acquired conditions such as gallbladder and bile duct stones, various hernias and fistulas, hemorrhoids, pancreatic and choledochal cysts. BCMF also supports surgery only for early-stage cancers.
BCMF addresses neurological conditions affecting the nervous system that is operatable. This includes congenital anomalies like spina bifida, meningocele, encephalocele, and hydrocephalus, as well as acquired conditions such as brain tumors, traumatic brain injuries, and multiple intracranial cysts.

Common surgical treatments include cesarean sections for delivery and addressing gynecological problems such as ovarian cysts, myomas, polyps, and conditions requiring hysterectomy. Early-stage gynecological cancers, cervical cancer, and malignant ovarian tumors are occasionally supported.
Eye conditions are a significant focus for BCMF. Many patients are referred through our outreach vision screening project and partners. We support surgeries for conditions such as congenital or senile cataracts, glaucoma, retinoblastoma, and retinal detachment.
Patients with various operatable genitourinary issues such as bladder, urethral, ureteric, or kidney stones, urinary tract obstructions, hydronephrosis, genital prolapse, congenital hypospadias, hydrocele, benign prostate hypertrophy, and other neoplastic conditions have received required surgery through BCMF patient service program.
Burns are considered by many to be a neglected health crisis in developing countries, particularly among poor women and children who use open flames for cooking and lighting and do n't have access to medical care when accidents happen. Dermatological conditions, including burns and corrosions due to accidents, and various ulcers, including diabetes ulcers, scar contracture gangrene, and keloid scar and cellulitis are also treated surgically through the help of BCMF. BCMF supports patients with both old and new burns requiring a range of treatments including daily dressing, surgery, physical rehabilitation, and skin grafts.
Congenital cleft lip and cleft palate are among the most common congenital conditions in Burma and along the Thai-Burma border. BCMF helps these patients receive surgery through partner hospitals. Additionally, we assist patients with diseases affecting the jaw, mouth, dentofacial area, tongue, and related tissues.
BCMF provides surgical treatment for abnormal growths and tumors, including benign tumors and localized swellings. This includes conditions such as lipoma, sebaceous cysts, hemangiomas, and lymphangiomas.
We support surgical treatments for conditions such as nasal polyps, cellulitis or abscess of the ear, tonsillar hypertrophy, and other neoplastic diseases affecting the ear, nose, and throat.
In some cases, a splenectomy, the removal of the spleen, is necessary for Thalassemia patients to prevent further complications. BCMF supports these surgeries as well as other surgical interventions, including thyroid surgery.
The Burma Children Medical Fund (BCMF) was established in 2006 in response to the increasing number of children on the Thai-Burma border who required complex medical treatment and surgery that is not available at local clinics or hospitals. Prior to BCMF being established, children who required surgery had their symptoms treated and lived either severely incapacitated lives or died prematurely as a result.
