Nay Linn Zaw

Sespected Tumor Behind Eye

Nay Linn Zaw is 28 years old and lives in Mudon, Mon state, Burma. He has six brothers and sisters, aged between 16-26 years. The youngest still goes to school and he works with the other siblings to support the youngest child and the family. His father had his fingers amputated and can no longer work after an accident cutting a tree in the jungle. Nay Linn Zaw is not married.

He has worked as a farmer, farming rice since he was 15years old and only went to school till he was 8years, because his family could not afford schooling. The land his family work on is not owned by them so they only get a commission on the amount that is produced per year. They usually receive 50tins of rice rusks per year which makes 25 lots of 10kg tins of rice.  This is not enough to support his family so he and his siblings, work on other farms, when they can, to get additional money.

About three years ago Nay Linn Zaw felt pain in his left eye and it started to swell. He found it difficult to work and would take medicine for the pain and would often have to take a few days off work because of the pain. In Burma there is no free medical treatment and because he did not have any money he did not seek any medical help for almost three years. Two months ago, when it became severe, his family lent him money to go to hospital and he travelled to Mawlamyine, Mon State. He was told that he needed a CT scan, which he could not afford. He made the long trip home with no treatment and no hope. It cost him 30,000kyat (US$37) to go to Mawlamyine for transport, to see the doctor and for medicine. This is a lot of money for his family and it will take him a while to pay it back. The swelling was still getting worse and he began to worry that his eye would fall out of the socket. Eventually, his friend from Myawaddy told him about Mae Tao Clinic, the free medical clinic for Burmese based in Mae Sot, Thailand. All his family; cousins, aunties and friends lent him 100,000kyat (US$120) to travel to Myawaddy to cross the border to be treated at Mae Tao Clinic. He told us that he is very worried about borrowing this money as his siblings will now have to work more to earn enough to pay for food.

He said that he would like to get better to go home and work to support his family. He also wants to pay back the money he has had to spend on medicine and seeking treatment. He said he is not trying to get a wife yet as he can only just afford to live and look after his parents.

Nay Linn Zaw has been referred to Chiang Mai to have his eye properly diagnosed to assess if the cause of his problems is a tumour or some other treatable condition. Without funding, Nay Linn Zaw will live with this debilitating eye condition or, if it is a malignant tumour, he will eventually die. BCMF are looking for a donor for Nay Linn Zaw to receive the treatment he requires to get well and be able to go home to his family.
