Than Zaw Oo
Than Zaw Oo’s mother has had 7 children but 4 of her children died shortly after birth. Now, her youngest child has been diagnosed with a heart problem. Than Zaw Oo is 9 months old and was born at Mae Tao Clinic (MTC). Three months after he was born his mother took to MTC again as the child had severe pneumonia and the medic at the clinic told her he had a heart problem. The child recovered and his mother returned home. The child has very few symptoms at present, only fever occasionally. His mother returned to MTC this week as the child had a fever. Than Zaw Oo’s family moved to Thailand from Burma 4 years ago. They moved to Thailand to find work. Than Zaw Oo’s mother sells vegetables for a living, she carries a basket on her head and sells vegetables on the street. Her husband goes out everyday to look for work doing odd jobs, but there is not always enough work for him to do. They earn between 60-100 Baht/day (US$2-3) each. The two youngest children stay with a family friend while their parents are working and the old child goes to school.
Than Zaw Oo’s mother hopes that her child can get better so that he can grow up to get an education and get a good job. His mother hopes he does not have to do such hard work like her and her husband.
