Saw Eh Christ

Saw Eh Christ Saw Eh Christ
Saw Eh Christ is from Karen State in Burma, he goes to the Pa Yar Taung migrant boarding school in Thailand on the Thai-Burma border.  He has a suspected Hemagioma on his left cheek.
His family live in an IDP area that is currently controlled by the SPDC and DKBA.  He has 4 siblings, and his mother is expecting another baby any day.  His older sister died when she was four years old from cerebral malaria.

Saw Eh Christ’s father is a farmer.  However, in their area the DKBA and SPDC forcibly recruit villagers to do forced labour.  Saw Eh Christ’s father says he is forcibly recruited about ten times a year to do labour or as a porter.  In the rainy season, he works growing paddy and in the summer he burns charcoal for a living. In the summer he earns 2000 baht for the whole season, and in the rainy season he does not have an income, he only gets rice paddy for his family to eat.  Saw Eh Christ’s mother also helps her husband on the farm when she can, however she is heavily pregnant at the moment and cannot help.  When her husband and son go to Chiang Mai for treatment, their families will help her look after the other children.  Currently, only Saw Eh Christ is in school, the two younger children will also go to Pa Yar Taung when they are older.

Saw Eh Christ’s father says he came to Pa Yar Taung by foot when a teacher contacted the village and informed him that he would need to come to the school because the child was not well.  It took him 4 hours to get to Pa Yar Taung.  At Pa Yar Taung the teachers told him that they would need to come to MTC, and that the child will eventually need to go to Chiang Mai to get treatment.  Saw Eh Christ’s father says that he first heard about MTC when his eldest child was sick 6 years ago.  At the time, the child was severely sick and someone in their village told them to bring her to MTC.  They came to the clinic but the child died from cerebral malaria.

Saw Eh Christ’s father tells us that he first noticed the child’s problem when he was 2 years old.  At the time, Saw Eh Christ had fallen down and his cheek became swollen.  His parents used traditional medicine and the swelling subsided.  When Saw Eh Christ was 5 years old the swelling occurred again and his parents again used traditional medicine and the swelling went down.  However, in June, 2009 his cheek became severely swollen while he was at school.  His teacher brought him to MTC and he was sent to MSH.  They could not treat him at MSH and told them that he would need to go to CMH for treatment.  His father says that is so difficult for them to get treatment as the family has no money and he does not know how to get to the hospital. He says that at the moment there are many people helping them.

Saw Eh Christ says that he feels pain in his cheek and he says he is feeling sad and tired.  He says he hopes he can better so that he can get an education and he says he will help his parents on the farm when he grows up.  His father looks very sad at this and says that he wants the child to get an education so that he can grow up and be a medic or a doctor.  He says that he does not want him to have to work like him on the farm as it is very hard work.
