Naw Pu baby

Naw Pu’s baby is 3 days old. She was born with a meningocele on her lower back and club feet. She is from a Karen family and she has on brother and a sister.
Naw Pu’s baby was born 3 days ago at home. When she was born she was blue in the face and she had an open wound on her back. The wound was leaking pus and blood. Her mother said she was very sad (even as she recalled the birth to us, she was awash with tears). They brought her straight to the Mae Tao Clinic (MTC) and a friend came with her. Naw Pu’s husband is away from the family for work. She was admitted to RH IPD at MTC and the medic there told her they would need to send the baby to Mae Sot Hospital. At Mae Sot Hospital they could not treat her so they referred the child to Chiang Mai. They diagnosed the baby with a meningocele and club foot.
Naw Pu lives on the Thai-Burma border near Mae Sot. Her husband lives and works in Bangkok. Naw Pu was living in Bangkok but came home to the Thai-Burma border in August to have her baby. They have lived in Bangkok for five years. Her mother has cared for her children (aged 12 and 5) in Burma for five years. Her husband earns 3,500 Baht a month and she earns about 3,000 Baht a month. Her husband does daily work and she used to work as a maid.
Naw Pu is very sad and worried about her child’s condition. She is very emotional in our interview. She says that she hopes her child can get well so that she can go to school and maybe one day become a teacher.
