Linn Let Phyu
Linn Let Phyu’s mother first noticed her child’s imperforated anus when she was 2 days old. Her family are from Naypidaw in Burma andher uncle took the child to the local clinic. The clinic sent the child to Naypidaw Hospital. Linn Let Phyu’s mother followed them to the hospital, she did not go with them straight away as she was still very sore from labour. At Naypidaw Hospital, they gave the child an I.V drip and told her mother that she should only feed the child by breast. After 2 days in the hospital, Linn Let Phyu had a colostomy operation to allow her to pass stool through a hole in her abdomen. They doctor in Naypidaw told them that they would need to go for a follow up operation in Chiang Mai in order to reverse the colostomy and open up her anus. However, Linn Let Phyu’s family could not afford to go to Rangoon for the second operation. The colostomy operation in Naypidaw cost them 100,000 Kyat (US$100). To pay for the surgery they had to borrow money from Linn Let Phyu’s grandmother. Linn Let Phyu’s father is a farmer and works in the jungle near their home. He earns 1,000 Kyat (US$1.40) a day. Linn Let Phyu’s mother stays at home to care for her children. Linn Let Phyu’s 8 year old sister goes to school and is staying with her grandmother while her mother tries to get the child treatment.
Linn Let Phyu’s mother heard about Mae Tao Clinic (MTC) from her sister-in-law who is living in Mae Sot, on the Thai side of the Thai-Burma border. Her sister explained to them that MTC would help them for free. It took them 3 days to travel to the Thai-Burma border and cost them 30,000 Kyat (US$30).
Linn Let Phyu’s mother hopes her child can get better. She says they have no money but she hopes she can send her to school and hopes that the child can get a higher education- but she is unsure whether the family will be able to afford this in the future.
