Dai Han Nan

Dai Han NanDai Han Nan is 4 and a half years old.  One year ago Dai Han Nan was at home in her house in Kaw Ka Rate in Burma.  She was walking through the house and fell through a hole in the wooden slats in the floor.  Her right leg fell through the hole.  She was at home alone as her mother was working in the field next to their house.  She was able to pull herself out of the hole, and when her mother returned she told her mother what happened and her mother put ice on the child’s leg.  However, the swelling did not go down and after 6 months her mother took her to the hospital in Kaw Ka Rate.  At the hospital the doctor told them he had not seen an infection like this before and he decided to do surgery and open her leg to take a look (she now has a big scar on her thigh).  He told them he could not treat her as he did not know what was wrong.  They stayed at the hospital one month until they ran out of money.  It cost them 200,000 Kyat (US$ 200).  To pay for this Dai Han Nan’s mother had to borrow money from family.

Dai Han Nan is an only child.  Her father died when she was 3 months old.  His family think that he had malaria but cannot be sure.  Her mother works when she can at different odd jobs.  She does not have a steady income as she cannot get work every day.  Dai Han Nan’s mother says that she has known about Mae Tao Clinic for many years.  They came to get help as they could not afford to go to the hospital any more and her daughter’s condition was not improving.

Dai Han Nan’s mother says that her daughter is ok during the day, but in the evenings her skin becomes very itchy and it is difficult for her to sleep, they have even tried to give her medicine to help her sleep but it does not work.  Her mother says that it is so difficult for her to get her child treatment as she has no money.  She says that she is very sad as her daughter has not been well for so long and she has not been able to help her.  She hopes her child will get better in the future and she will try to send her to school if she can earn enough money to pay for it.
