However, by the time Maung Nyo Thoung was one year old, the growth on his face had developed to a large size, blocking his eye and making his head very heavy. Ta Moo’s sister took them to Mae Tao Clinic, a day’s journey from her village in Burma and then returned to care for her sister’s 3 other children.
At Mae Tao Clinic, Maung Nyo Thoung was seen by medics and referred to Chiang Mai Hospital for surgery to remove the growth. Through the kind generosity of a donor, transport, accommodation and surgery in Chiang Mai University Hospital was arranged. The process took 10 months and cost 56,000 Thai Baht ($1775)
In Chiang Mai, Surgeons removed the congenital growth, a large operations leaving Maung Nyo Thoung with scars across his head and face. His mother was thrilled with the result. ‘Now he is not ugly, he looks very beautiful’.
Maung Nyo Thoung’s ordeal is not yet over however. When his scars have healed, they must return to Chiang Mai Hospital so that his nose can be reconstructed. This is planned to happen in June 2007, but as before, Ta Moo cannot pay for the procedure her son needs in order to live and full and happy. She is relying heavily on a donor being found.
Ta Moo hopes her son will become a doctor so he can help children as he was helped. Today she is taking her son home, eager to see her other children and to reunite their family. She hopes that a donor will be found for Maung Nyo Thoung’s second procedure, so they can really begin their lives together as a normal family.
She is very glad she did not give her baby away.
