He has been very quiet during the last ten days at the Clinic. It is embarrassing when people frown and move away from you all the time. Other children won’t play with him and he misses home.
Ever since a febrile fit that rendered him unconscious when he was a few months old, Soe Lwin Oo’s bowels have seeped out of his control. Three years ago his father took him to the nearest clinic in Burma. Doctors there said there was nothing they could do. Back in their village, local medics gave him injections and medicine, none of which seemed to make any difference.
Then an old friend told them about the Mae Tao Clinic. Oo Ba Sein left his paddi fields and charcoal making business and father and son made the two day boat and car trip to cross the border to Thailand. His wife stayed behind with their other five children.
Mae Tao Clinic’s de-worming treatment expunged a large worm but it hasn’t stopped the problem. Soe Lwin Oo needs laparoscopic investigation unavailable at the Clinic. It is available nearby at the Thai Mae Sot Hospital but costs more than his father can afford. He may need surgery further away at Chiang Mai Hospital.
The Clinic often does not have money for its core work. There is no contingency money for the likes of Soe Lwin Oo. His family cannot afford treatment at Mae Sot Hospital, or Chiang Mai Hospital, if this is deemed necessary. BCMF have taken on his case, but need funding to get him the treatment necessary for him to stand any chance of a normal life.
