Program Manager: Kanchana Thornton

Kanchana Thornton, graduated from UTS with Bachelor of Nursing, Post-Graduate Diploma in Maternal and Child Health and has been an Australian Volunteer at the Mao Tao Clinic on the Thai-Burma border since 2001 through Australian Volunteers International. Kanchana has been working as a Thai Government liaison coordinator, Child Health Program coordinator and BCMF Program Manager liaising between Mae Tao Clinic, Mae Sot Hospital and Chiang Mai Hospital.

Medical Advisor: Dr Cynthia Maung

Dr Cynthia Maung will provide the medical advice for the program. Dr Cynthia is a Karen woman who fled Burma in 1988 and founded the Mae Tao Clinic. Dr Cynthia has been recognized internationally for her humanitarian work and for her work at Mae Tao Clinic.

Name: Mu Ni

Age: 28

At MTC: 9 years

Current position at MTC: Manager of Adult In-patient Department since 2004

Education: 1997-199 Primary health care training, then eighteen months rotations into difference departments at Mae Tao clinic. My last rotation was at adult In-patient Department where I stay and work up to today.

Involvements in BCMF: I refer patients that are unable to be treat at the clinic or at Mae Sot Hospital to BCMF.

Name: Tin Shwe

Age: 28

At MTC: 5 years

Current position at MTC: Manage of hospital referral since 2004

Education: Eighteen months Health assistance training, then six rotations into
difference departments at Mae Tao clinic.
One month in Reproductive Health. After Dr Cynthia ask me to work with referral
team. This is because I can speak four languages
(Karen, Burmese, Thai and English).

Involvement in BCMF: Went the program except patient. I will to take patient to Mae Sot Hospital (MSH) to get referral form to Chiang Mai hospital or if patients’ at MSH and needs to be refer to Chiang Mai for further treatment. Then I will inform kanchana to come an access and talk to MSH doctor.

I also help taking patients for follow-up post-op in Mae sot, if that was the recruitment for Chiang Mai Hospital.

I have to communicating with patients regarding traveling and medical appointment dates.

Name: Billy Htoo

Age: 34

At MTC: 8 years

Current position at MTC: Manager of Trauma Deptartment

Education: 1996-1998 Teaching at Noh Poe refugee Camp

1998-2000 Primary Health Care Training

Involvements in BCMF: I refer patients that are unable to be treat at the clinic or at Mae Sot Hospital to BCMF.

Name: May Soe

Age: 36

At MTC: 12 years

Current position at MTC: Manager of Child Out- Patients Department

Education:1989-Basic Medical Training

1994-Maternal and Childe Health Training

One-year rotations into difference departments at Mae Tao clinic

1998-1999- Manage of a boarding school in a refugee camp

Involvements in BCMF: I refer patients that are unable to be treat at the clinic or at Mae Sot Hospital to BCMF and monitoring children’s health while waiting for surgery.
