The BCMF was founded in 2002 by “Dr. Sandy,” a U.S. pediatrician who went to the Mae Tao Clinic in 2001 to work in the Child Care department. During his time there, he saw children with conditions that could be corrected with a “simple” operation or procedure, if only there were means to refer the child to appropriate services. These were patients with medical conditions that required surgery or special tests that could not be done at Mae Tao Clinic, who, if left untreated, would die or be significantly handicapped. The fund was created to help these children. After Dr. Sandy left the clinic, Dr. Elisabetta and Kanchana took over the fund management and patient care, allowing the BCMF to continue its mission. Dr. Elisabetta is no longer part of the fund since February 2006.
